Friday September 6th

It's been a few weeks, so I thought I'd do a post while Melissa finishes the ironing.

We've not been up to much really. I mean, we've both been and work and Penny's been a little menace, but what else is new.

Penny started nursery properly today, which meant full uniform. Her supervisor Gale gave high praise indeed. She brought home a painting she'd done. I couldn't quite understand what it was supposed to be of, but when I asked her what colour it was she told me "owinge" even though it was very definitely blue.

She's been absolutely fine, aside from a minor illness blip earlier in the week. She woke up at about 11:30 while Melissa was at work and she was burning hot and shaking. She was fine, otherwise. Chatting away, insistent on watcing Peppa Pig with me in bed and so forth, but she was hot, hot, hot.

The next day, after an afternoon in town with Becky, Jim, Tina and the kids she took her to the hospital as her temperature seemed to spike again. Her throat was bright red, and all signs pointed to a viral infection.

Melissa brought her home, then went to work, and then a man came with a bottle of kiddy ibuprofen which was hastily administered. She went to bed and slept just fine.

The following day we went to Blackpool Pleasure beach with Becky, Jim, Tina and the kids. The kids had gone back to school for the most part, so we barely queued for anything. Result. Penny was fine, Becky, Jim and Tina were fine and the kids, Amelia and Josh gave me a frightening glimpse at the future. They were very well behaved, don't get me wrong, they just didn't stop. It didn't help that Amelia, four, took it upon herself to consume her entire body weight in candy floss.

Once we'd 'done' the fair, we went for a drink, then we went for (the worst) fish and chips (ever), and then home, under the illuminations. We'd hoped Penny would stay awake for the Dora section. She didn't. Poor kid was knackered. We all had a fantastic time.

Aside from the trip to Blackpool there's little else to share. Penny was supposed to have a drama group thing today, but it was cancelled so she just tore round Pipsqueaks with Harry. They've figured out the big slide now so Melissa and Emma just sat the bottom gabbing while the kids went round and round in circles. Up and down, up and down.

I suppose, then, that's it for a few weeks.

Adios amigos!

August 18th - 2 years and one day old.

She turned two yesterday. Unbelievable.

We've been up to loads recently. The big girls bed situation isn't going terribly, and we've not had too many issues that I can't resolve by shouting at her. Or giving her a stern talking to, depending on your point of view.

We've had guests staying this past week, Melissa's cousins from Devon. We've taken them to the Sea Life Centre in Manchester (not bad, worth the £12 discounted price you get on line, also, booking online advisable due to excessive queues). Penny was a big fan of the turtles.

We also took Penny to see Iggle Piggle and the gang at In The Night Garden Live which she loved.

She's talking more and more, near sentences, and she'll say things that neither of us have taught her, which is always good fun.

We've had cracking weather for as long as I can remember, so naturally it lagged down all day for her birthday. It didn't keep the kids of the bouncy castle though, and a good time was had by all. Except my father in law, who lost his brass, magnetic, bottle opening donkey. The poor chap is inconsolable.

Loads of cake, sweets, drinks and friends ... and that's enough for a good old fashioned party. We barely let the rain affect us due to a massive marquee that we erected in the garden.

I got home at 23:30, ish, with the neighbours, who were kind enough to let me jump in their taxi once we realised there wouldn't be enough room for me to sleep (comfortably) at the in laws house.

Melissa woke me up at about 8:30am to inform me my father in law as coming to collect me after a trip to the tip. Fortunately for him he brought good news of sausage butties, but also, unfortunately for him, he brought bed news about his donkey, which was still MIA.

The rest of today has been spent clearing up the aftermath of the party, and just everyone basically feeling knackered.

Thanks to everyone who came, and to everyone who sent cards and gifts. Thanks to family, and friends and, well, just thank you again.

Happy birthday to my princess, and well done to Melissa for organising the whole thing. And to nanny for the delicious cake, which certain parties believe wasn't portioned out fairly.

This evening we're getting Chinese food, and I'm getting a beer. Back to work tomorrow.

This is not my happy face.

Birthday outfit #2

Peppa Pig featured heavily in the birthday list...

July 28th

Well hello theere...

After many requests (one) I've committed to a post. I hope this message finds you all well. I myself am mildly hungover, and probably on the cusp of hypothermia having waited in the rain for nearly an hour for a taxi last night.

We've not been up to much. Working, mainly. The weather's been exceptional (which makes last nights rain even more galling) and we've spent a fair bit of time outside. I even weeded the garden. There's a patio out there. Who knew?

Penny's been great. We think she's suffering a bit with hay fever, and has been particularly snotty these last few weeks. She's also got a wicked cough, and is very slobbery, so it's entirely possibly it's just the last of her teeth coming through. We've had issues getting her to sleep of an evening, mainly because her room is like a furnace. It's a delicate balance of fans being on or off, and doors being open a jar or closed tight. Generally speaking once she's asleep though, she's asleep.

That will all change tonight, I'm sure, as I'm today converting her cot into a bed. She's 2 in a few weeks. How fucked up's that? Even more terrifying : she starts playgroup next Friday. Uniform and all.

She's been talking loads. Some of it even makes sense. Random words that form pidgin sentences. Everything seems to either be an exclamation of shock. "birdy!" "airplane!" or a demand of some sort. "swing!" "milk!" "Peppa pig!"

Me and Melissa have been buying Penny some of her birthday presents, and today I think we're heading up to Aintree, to Kiddiecare, for some stop-your-baby-falling-out-of-bedders and probably some cat litter. Not from Kiddiecare.

My parents visited yesterday. We sat in the garden and Penny and her cousin Amelia painted. Everything. Amelia at one point thought Penny needed green and blue streaks in her hair. They both decided the patio wasn't green and blue enough. Likewise the conservatory and the bird table. After they'd both exhausted themselves Aunty Vicky took Amelia home and Melissa chucked Penny in the shower, and then into bed. Me, my mum and dad were besieged by flying ants, which disappeared almost as quickly as they appeared and then we four sat in the garden chatting.

Penny woke up shortly after they'd left, and we all got ready to go out. I headed into Liverpool for my mate Tom's surprise 30th birthday party and Melissa went to her mum and dads with Penny for a bbq.

Once I left the station a female crackhead (crackette?) approached me "ahh mate, you haven't got some change you could spare have you?" not wanting to be a complete dickhead I felt that lying was the best direction in which to go and said "Aww, no, I've no money at all, I'm looking for a cash machine myself". That ought to do it. No? "aww there's one up there, just turn left at the lights" and then, apropos of nothing she said "I'm from Manchester meself". I looked at her and said "thanks" again and started to walk in the direction of the cash machine, to make my lie seem more believable. "aww, you couldn't like, if I come with you, get some money out, then go to the shop, buy something and give me some spare change?". I was incredulous at this point and said, somewhat rudely, probably, "errr... no". She said "aww please can you spare a couple of quid?" I said "how much?!" she said "a couple of quid". I think I laughed in her face and said "no! If I had 20p or 30p then perhaps..." but she stormed off and said "oh fuckin' forget it", so I put my headphones back in and walked off, fearing at every turn for my life.

We all had a cracking night in town, and I walked to the station, in the rain, and then stood outside Ormskirk station for about 45 minutes waiting for a taxi. In the end I just got in one that randomly turned up. A couple and another man asked if they could jump in too, they were going my way. I agreed, because I'm not that much of a dickhead (despite what you might just have read about crackheads), and they each gave me a fiver, meaning my taxi home only cost a fiver too. Sorted.

I shall, if I get a second, this evening post a selection of photos from our holiday.

Hope you're all well. I'll be back on or around Penny's birthday.

Holiday!

Hi!

We're back!

Before I go on I'm just going to take this opportunity to say I wont be blogging daily from this point on. There's not been a great deal to say of late, and I feel like I'm blogging for the sake of it. A great man once said "never feel like you HAVE to blog", so I'm just going to do one a week, or one a fortnight, or one a month. Or, as and when shit goes down that I feel people might like to know about. To wit, we got back from a week in Tunisia yesterday morning, and here's some stuff that we did.

We left the house on a Wednesday afternoon and arrived in Tunisia some hours later, in the middle of the night. We got to sleep in our hotel at about 4am.

Here's Penny in the airport in her jim jams :

She's learned loads of new words while I've not been posting. If you asked her in the week leading up to departure "where are you going Penny?" she would reply "HOLIDAYS!" even if she was going to bed, or (the) ASDA. She'd wake up in the hotel declaring it was "party time!" and she wanted to "dance" with the "kids". "Aiport" and "aeroplane" were common, too. And "Pringles!" which is almost exclusively what she ate. The food was good, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't Pringles.

We had a great time, and got up to the following :

  • Swimming.
  • Walking over a small bridge, over and over.
  • Dancing.
  • Drinking.
  • Sleeping.
And above all things:
  • Relaxing.
We truly did relax, and we met some lovely people, too. Penny was, by and large, well behaved, sleeping when appropriate and doing more or less what we told her to as and when we told her to do it.

The flights were good enough. After take off she slept, leaving me and Melissa to try and doze, too (impossible) and the epic three hour transfer on the way home was the only real down point.

Some photos :

There'll be more photos on Facebook if and when I can be bothered posting, labelling and tagging the bastard things.

Melissa and I are both back to work on Monday, so this weekend we shall be continuing along the relaxation theme, except for the hoovering I'll be doing in a minute, and the spot of DIY I've accomplished too.

Thanks to you all for reading daily for over 2 years. I'll continue to post as and when I see fit.

Day 850

I was woken up by a phonecall from work. I leapt out of bed, careful not to crush Penny, who ended up in our bed again last night with her poorly teeth, and was in work by 7:30am.

Fortunately I'd slept well and the problem was easy enough to resolve, and by 9:30am I'd had my breakfast and was ploughing on with other stuff.

Melissa and Penny picked me up from work, we nipped up to Wigan, to (the) ASDA for beer and cat food and then came home.

It was bathtime for Penny at this point so in she got. She had her milk and I cooked tea for me and Melissa (Penny ate earlier).

Penny's in bed, Melissa's soon to be packing, and I'm hoping to enjoy a beer and a movie.

See you tomorrow!

Day 849

Wednesday.

Shitty night. Penny woke up at about 1:30am with belly ache or sore teeth. It was hard to tell. Whatever the case, she ended up in bed with us, writhing around. It took her 90 minutes to get comfortable. Neither me nor Melissa were comfortable at any point.

At 7am I ignored my alarm until I realised it was 7:30am and I was late. Jeff was nearby and picked me up, thankfully.

Today was something of a blur due to fatigue. I'll get over it. I walked home and found Melissa and Penny going apeshit in the kitchen over Melissa's new steam mop. Penny was going mental for the large cardboard boxes that it came in. We had fun playing 'boo' and hiding in them while Melissa pottered in the kitchen.

Penny had her bath, Melissa hoovered. Soon Penny will be asleep and I'll be made to watch Melissa with the steam mop and feign enthusiasm and wonderment.

I miss her when she's at work, I really do.

See you tomorrow!

Day 848

She woke up at about 6:10am. Not too bad.

I showered and walked to work, it was warm.

Work was ok. Nothing excited happened, not really, and Melissa and Penny met me afterwards.

Penny's got a graze on her cheek, near her eye, where she fell off the bed face first and didn't stop. She screamed, I believe, but 'tis but a scratch.

Melissa cooked us all some tea then she got ready for work leaving me and Penny to play. She filled her nappy at about 5:30pm so I bathed her and we watched some TV in the lead up to bed time.

She's asleep now, after a milk struggle. I heard her say "oh no!" through the monitor, and I went in to investigate. She's not happy with the arrangement of the soft toys in her bed. She must have me confused with someone who gives a shit, as I simply picked her up, gave her some more milk, and put her back down. 3 goes round like that and she was asleep.

This evening I have bed to make up and a small amount of dishes to clean. Then relax.

See you tomorrow.
